Toastmasters Competent Communication Manual (CC) progressively outlines and builds essential speech-making and speech delivery skills. The second project is about organizing your speech.
In general, the guide recommends the following steps:
Good speech organization is essential if your audience is to follow and understand your presentation. You must take the time to put your ideas together in an orderly manner... The opening should catch the audience's attention, the body must support the idea you want to convey, and the conclusion should reinforce your ideas and be memorable. Transitions between thoughts should be smooth (TI - Competent Communication)
In general, the guide recommends the following steps:
- Select a topic. Choose something which is best for you and your audience (timely and relevant)
- Once your topic is known, determine the point you wish to make (to persuade, to entertain...)
- Make an outline. There are many ways to organize, depending on the topic and objective
- Chronologically
- Spatially
- Causally
- Comparatively
- Topically
- Problem-Solution
- Develop the opening
- Draft the body: Main ideas elaborated by subpoints; and subpoints supported with supporting material (statistics, testimonies, anecdotes, visual aids, or facts)
- Make the conclusion. Reinforce the main ideas, and leave the listeners with a lasting impression
Finally, pay attention to your transitions between intro & body, main points and subpoints, subpoints and supports, supports to another main idea, and finally, from the last support to the conclusion. Transitions can be words, phrases, or whole statements and/or questions.
