Just watching 강호동 again on the teli(sp.?) with the wife, you know the show about the guy and his buddies going camping and eating all around the Korean countryside? And... it got me to thinking. Would a show like this even be possible (let alone successful) in Canada (or US)? It seems like it wouldn't for a few reasons which I've just been thinking about...

Reason 1, seems to be the completely different relationship we've constructed between ourselves (Canadians) and our celebs, than between the Koreans and theirs. First of all, to me, I can't really name a lot of Canadian pop culture celebs today, besides Avril Lavigne. Otherwise, all the other names which pop into my head are probably a little dated (Celine Dion, Anne Murray, John Candy, etc. etc.). And, also to me, it seems that our celebs and other media personalities are like gods, living somewhere in a cloud, untouchable to us. I couldn't imagine these people (if you could get them together), driving around the Canadian countryside, and gulping down hamburgs and hot dogs at the local campground live on TV.

Even if you could actually get these people to do something like that, maybe the next question is, would there be an audience for that? Personally, I think there might be potential (does this blog constitute legal copyright?? I think it does, hmm), you know, the whole celeb reality show idea + local tourism may have something. Audience capture for local Canadian media has always been a problem in Canada, however, what with living next door to a country like the US.

Another reason something like this might not work, is logistics. Canada/US are perhaps physically too big. However, I think Canada lends itself better, because of its small populations and very localized regions. I can imagine this same idea taking off in other countries I've lived/travelled however, for example Hungary.

Food for thought...
